This lesson surveys surveys George Washington's Presidency. It provides background information on Washington himself, the Oath, and centers on the issues Washington faced during his time in office (emphasis debt). Additionally, the Jefferson/Hamilton debt debate is highlighted. Within the lesson, I often have students read (in pairs or individually) about myths such as the cherry tree and Washington’s wooden teeth. My students always enjoy reading about these. Also embedded in the Powerpoint are two short video clips from the HBO series John Adams that focus on Washington’s Oath and the Hamilton/Jefferson debate.
Following the Powerpoint, I have my students read and answer follow-up questions on the Whiskey Rebellion. At the conclusion of the lesson, my students complete an exit slip that I use as a formative assessment.
