I love teaching about the American Revolution! I love it even more that there are so many great historical fiction pieces to go with it! This unit was created using George Washington's Socks by Elvira Woodruff. I used this in my classroom as we read the book. I created comprehension (text-dependent) questions and a writing response for each chapter. We used our reading journals. I mainly used the writing responses. I would assign 2 chapters a night and give them the writing response strips for those chapters. They would read the chapters for homework and respond in their journals. Then, we would discuss them the next day. I would also use the questions I wrote to guide discussion. I did not give them the questions every day. I usually just used them for oral discussion, but you could use them for grades if you wanted. Then, I chose a close reading passage in the chapters they read and highlighted a something specific I wanted the students to see. I also included the close reading pages/paragraphs that I used in this unit.

If you don't have a class set or reading group set of this book, you could give the reading response prompts after you read the chapter aloud, and they could do the writing for homework. Or, just use this unit however you like! :O)

There is also a comprehension quiz over the entire book at the end of the unit.

I did NOT include answer keys for the questions or the writing prompt because I used them for discussion purposes. I did include a key for the quiz.

I hope you enjoy this unit as much as my students did!
