This 9 page Word document is a synopsis of the plot of the novel in "Fill in the blanks" format. It is divided into chapter summaries, each of which has a word bank to assist students. There are 13 cloze tests (I combined a couple of the shorter chapters).
I find this a very useful approach with weaker students (who struggle to write their own summaries). It's a good way to ensure that all students know what has happened before moving on to the next part of the novel. Alternatively, you could use it as an aid to revision, when you have finished the novel. In this case, it suits both strong and weak students. The solution, which is included, provides a complete summary of the novel.
This is an active learning task. It forces students to think while they're working to complete it. You could redact the word banks to make the activity more challenging.
Students, particularly weak and EAL students, get a great sense of achievement from this activity.
There are 15 pages in total. The student exercise consists of 9 pages. The remaining pages contain the solution.
Download the preview file to see the assignment (and solution) for chapter 1. Even if you don't purchase this product, it will give you a useful exercise with which to start your study of the novel.
