NO-PREP LESSON!! PPT, exit ticket, blank map for labeling hot spots, check for understanding questions, visuals, and embedded video clips!
In-depth PPT where students learn the advantages and disadvantages of geothermal energy. Students end with a labeling activity that they then glue in their interactive notebooks.
I start having students come up with a definition of geothermal energy based on the words "geo" and "thermal". Students then focus on Iceland, a country that generates 100% of it's energy from renewable resources, with 25% coming from geothermal energy. Students then learn the advantages and disadvantages of geothermal energy followed by a multiple response strategy involving 5 true/false statements that all students must respond to.
Students then spend about 7 minutes on a mapping activity. I print out blank maps of the world for them and project on the bored a map showing the geothermal hot spots around the world. Students then color in and label these spots with red marker to help them remember the location of these hot spots. This also is a great visual to help students understand the main disadvantage of geothermal energy; that most of the Earth does not have enough magma near the surface to harness.
