In English and Spanish
This is a handout that I send home with my first grade students to complete for homework. I give them a week to complete it.
Students use a piece of poster board and draw a town using geometric guidelines. They draw a trapezoid, hexagon, parallelograms, and rhombi. They add streets and name the town. They write a description of their map. Descriptions and examples of the shapes are included in the instructions. This is done later in the geometry unit so that they have become familiar with polygons, straight lines, vertices, and sides. I encourage them to use this vocabulary in their description of their town.
This can be adapted for grades 1-5, just give them instructions on what information you would like them to include in their descriptions. It is a MS Word Document and you should be able to edit it.
The students love this project and get very creative!
