A great set of cards to help children develop their understanding of adverbs and how/why writers use them. The pack includes the following:
• 10 Activity Cards
Each of these introduces a different aspect of adverbs, explaining how/why they are used with examples to model this to the children. Each activity card sets the children a writing challenge based on the focus.
• 10 Response Cards
These can be photocopied as a writing frame for the children to use for their writing challenge.
• 10 Extra Challenge cards
Each of these is linked to an Activity Card - encouraging the children to apply what they have learned to writing a paragraph on a given theme.
• 10 Example Cards
Each of these is linked to an Extra Challenge Card - giving them a sample/example paragraph (that I have written) which can be used as a model for their own writing.
• 10 Picture Cards
These are linked to the Activity Cards - providing an A4 sized image that can be printed out and used to inspire the children’s writing.
Once laminated the cards become a fabulously versatile resource that can be used in a number of ways. Firstly, they make an easy to manage independent activity for Guided Reading carousels. I also often use them whole class, with children working together to discuss and develop their responses - sharing ideas, evaluating and redrafting. They make a very useful homework activity - quick and easy to photocopy for the whole class. Finally, they have proved a very helpful resource for my TA to use when Guided Writing with groups.
The children in my class over the last two years have enjoyed using these cards. Working on them has had a huge impact on the children’s skills as writers as they start applying their learning from these to their own independent writing.
