My studednts always loved when I introduced a skill with a "game-like" activity. Get Your Ducks in a Row can be used with the whole class or a small group of students as an introductory lesson to alphabetizing to the first letter. Afterwards it can be put in a center to be done independently with their answers recorded on the record sheet. I made 8 circles out of wiki-stiks to be placed around the first letter of each word. The students were taught that these were the only letters that needed to be addressed. The students were taught to use the ABC strip on their desk, the word wall alphabet, or the alphabet song to determine the correct order of the words. Modeling this with self-talk to explain the process of alphabetizing words shows the students what they need to be thinking about as they alphabetize. Glue the cover page to a file folder or a manila envelope. Cut the cards apart. Store the cards in a file folder or manila envelope.
