Get students moving with this fun and engaging exercise about collecting data. Put students into groups of 2. Then with a stopwatch (stopwatch.com) Athlete 1 will complete the task while athlete 2 is counting. After the 30 seconds is up, athlete 1 will record their number on their sheet ( I cut mine in half ). Now it is athlete 2’s turn! Reset the stopwatch and now Athlete 1 will be the counter for athlete 2! Continue until all exercises have been completed.
Now it is time to collect some data! On the board, I had each student tell me their number for the activity and I recorded for the class to see, they were also writing down the data on the COLLECT THE DATA page! This can also be done under a document camera!
Now it is time to organize! There are 4 graphs and I had my students choose which one they wanted to use for each activity. If you want more structure you can be more specific on which data is used for each graph.
Finally, students created 3 questions for their Dot plot and Stem and Leaf plots. They will the questions with their partner and solve each others questions. I modeled questions before having them do this part of the activity.
