Students can build a vocabulary practice booklet with this hands-on activity.
To prepare: Copy pages 1 - 4 and staple into a booklet. (I used the copy machine to shrink, fold, and staple. I found this to be helpful and child-sized, but full size will work as well.) Copy page 5 and keep separate for each student to cut.
In class: Have students cut out all fish from page 5. As they flip through the pages of the vocabulary practice booklet, have them identify which fish would show each: slide, flip, turn. Students glue each cut fish into the tank to show the movement words. Add some pizazz by using a brad to attach the “turn” fish. You may wish to have students draw the line of movement -- ie: an arrow to show the push of a slide, the curve of a turn, and the reflection line of a flip.
After completion, use this booklet as a reference during flips, turns, and slides of geometric shapes.
