Getting ready of the Constructed Response testing of Common Core standards requires multi-step problem solving activities.
Each worksheet contains one multi-step problem set up in a testing format. Each problem is focused on multiplication and/or division of fractions which are the fifth grade focus standards for Tennessee students. Included are problem solving sheets, a student check list page for each problem to assist students in self checking their work, and a teacher scoring guide which includes standards with suggested answers and the expected answers based on the Math Process standards. Student directions emphasize not only problem solving, but use of pictures and number lines to explain the answers, and reminders to label equations and answers.
My students have completed these problems independently, and then they have shared their work with a partner. We then share several student papers with the whole group to help all students gain a greater understanding of the need to label their work, complete all sections of the problems, and include equations and pictures to explain their thinking.
