When people prepared to sail to the New World, what did they take with them in order to be prepared when arriving in a new land? Students will work in small groups or as individuals to decide upon necessary items for the voyage depending on whether you are a sailor or passenger. 56 item cards from which to choose are included in this product from Teaching Near the River. Student groups can only choose 12 very necessary items and 8 extra choices for a total of 20 items to be loaded onto the ship. Once the group decides on their 20 items, each item must have a reason for taking the item on the ship based on either needing the item on the ship or when arriving in the New World. Your students will love discussing and making their case for why specific items should make the list. Compare the sailors' lists to the passengers' lists to see if there are any similarities. Whole class discussion questions are included as well as directions for using this product for individual students or in small groups. A photo of the finished product is included as well.
