This is a fun and interactive way to get to know your students without the boring questionnaire that they fill out in all of the other classes. This activity gives students structured control over the information that they choose to share. After students have completed their octagon I connect them on a wall in a honeycomb pattern. This displays both the individual and shared interests of the class and is a great getting to know you icebreaker as well. This is great for multicultural classrooms.
This could also be easily adapted for use in your classroom for a variety of ideas (historical people, fictional characters, math unit terms, etc.)
