As the new year starts, here is a one (or two) week unit to help K-2 students get to know each other. This is an integrated theme with language arts, math, science, and social studies activities to make an interesting and fun beginning to the school year. So start off the year with a picnic of fun activities to do while you are teaching classroom procedures or routines.
The unit starts out with a variety of name activities to help students get to know their classmates. Then, there are oral language activities to get the students talking and listening to each other. These activities will help the students learn about each other as well. Some activities can be used to teach vocabulary that would be helpful for any ELL students. Then there are some open ended activities for reading, writing, math, science, and social studies to use to assess prior knowledge and practice classroom routines.
The picnic unit culminates with a class picnic. You can have the students bring their own lunches or use the cafeteria lunch. It that is not possible, have a cookie picnic in the classroom to celebrate a great first few weeks of school.
