This is a 19-slide PowerPoint presentation, using the mnemonic device RITE to teach a basic, formulaic approach to writing open-response, literature-based essays, such as those that appear on most state-mandated exit exams. It is also very useful in basic writing classes at the college level--aimed at those who really can't write well enough to succeed in college. The Sample shows only the one slide containing the mnemonic and its explanation. Other slides go into much more detail on each of the four areas: Restate the question; Identify the literature; Tell the reader your thesis; Explain yourself thoroughly. We've had good luck with this as an introductory mini-lesson that can take a full class period, with discussion. Designed by Jeff Northrup; used by both Jeff and Ann in numerous classes.
