My school, like many others, has been working on a variety of new strategies for reading comprehension and pulling out the main idea. One strategy I really like is "getting the gist". I have tried a few different worksheets I found online, but I wanted to create my own that would work best for my group. I think it is a simple way to walk students through the steps of pulling out the key words and then writing a sentence to state the main idea of a nonfiction text. It is on a half sheet of paper so you waste less and it would be easy enough for students to complete on their own once the strategy is taught. Enjoy!
