This lesson is designed to be an informative introduction into the exciting world of graphic novels. Understanding visual literacy, format, and close reading is a key component of this lesson. This lesson includes a PowerPoint presentation and a companion group activity is available for purchase.
The teacher or librarian will need several copies of books in graphic novel format and traditional format in order to share with students and complete the activity.
Please be sure you have thoroughly read through the presentation and activity before beginning with students. It's important to have enough copies of the same books, but in the two different formats for the lesson and activity to be most meaning. For example, you will need copies of books such as, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Black Beauty, Frankenstein, Baby Sitter's Club, and others that are available in traditional and graphic novel versions. Also a variety of graphic novels of various genres is important to have to share and let students experience during the lesson.
This would be a great collaborative lesson between the classroom teacher and librarian, as the library would be the ideal setting.
This would also be a great way to spark interest in low-level readers with high-interest books.
