The Getting to Know You Glyph is a great resource for building community in the beginning of the school year. Have students cut out a shape from a large index card or sturdy piece of paper. Then, have them divide their shape into six sections. The sections can be any shape, size, or direction they would like! Have your students use the glyph page to decide what they would like to know about their classmate, and design their shape. You can even have them write a kind message on the back. Once students have finished their glyph, they can meet with a partner and ask each other about the things they chose from the glyph page. When they are done, they can trade cards to have a keepsake from their new friend!
This activity allows students to get to know their classmates in a safe way, by planning their questions in advance. It is a quick, fun activity that can easily be repeated with different partnerships. I hope you and your students enjoy this community building activity!
