I am in the process of creating tools that can be utilized with students to meet the expectations of the CCSS. Close reading is one of the key shifts for ELA/Instruction with the CCSS and it calls for "reading with a pencil." Annotation slows down the reader in order to deepen understanding of the initial reading and an understanding of the text that lasts. This bookmark can be used during instruction in close reading techniques and as a visual reminder of what proficient readers do while they read. Copy the bookmark on cardstock, fold it, adhere with double-stick tape and trim the edges. I create a number of tools for students to use during reading and to store in a pocket in their journals.
