The Gettysburg Address is an important document for any Civil War unit. There are two activities included in this resource: Word Splash writing activity and an Acrostic Poem. Both resources require no prep on your end and already to just PRINT and use! In addition, there is a primary source worksheet of the Gettysburg Address to use as an introduction.

About the WORD SPLASH:

Using a Word Splash is a great way to focus student writing. Students are asked to answer a Task question using a certain number of words. Providing focus words for students to use really helps students think about their word choices! Do you have students at varying ability levels in your class? Help all students feel successful by adjusting this assignment. By decreasing or increasing the number of words required, you can challenge all learners. A graphic organizer is provided to organize their writing.


If you are looking for a quicker way to assess student’s knowledge of the Gettysburg Address, assign the Acrostic poem. Students are asked to write down a word or phrase for each letter. Students can share their poems and look for similarities! Acrostic poems are awesome because they help expand vocabulary!

How to use this resource:

There are many ways to incorporate Word Splash writing activities or Acrostic Poems into any unit. They can be used as:

•Homework assignments

•Small Group Activities: Have a small group work together to select the words, write, edit and rewrite!

•Review assignments: Preparing for a test or quiz? Word Splashes can help students reinforce connection of ideas.

•Learning Stations: Set up review stations or content stations in your classroom. When students rotate, they will complete the task.
