I’ve used the movie Gettysburg about 40 times in my ten years of teaching a one semester, high-school level, American Civil War course and I cannot imagine showing the movie without this guidance for students. This valuable character chart helps students see the important relationships between the commanders and the chain of command so they appreciate the movie Gettysburg much more. But, I’ve also designed it for general use in any study of the Battle of Gettysburg.
The 11 x 17 size chart includes the key figures in the Union chain of command including Meade, Hancock, Reynolds, and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. On the Confederate side I have included Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, John Bell Hood, George Pickett and all three of his brigade commanders who play key roles in the movie – Lewis Armistead, James Kemper and Dick Garnett.
Each key figure has their title and interesting tidbits of information to draw students into the characters and enhance their appreciation of what they are watching. In addition, each figure is positioned within his overall context of the Battle of Gettysburg so students see connections between characters as well as the very basic fact of which side of the conflict the characters are serving.
You can print out one for each student and save these for the following year or display the entire chart on a projector. When I unveil the chart to students some have a reaction of “this is a lot of information” but after a brief review of characters and after they watch the movie with this in front of them for reference they truly appreciate the information.
A quotagories game on the movie, Gettysburg Address primary source activity, Civil War graphic organizers and other Civil War materials are available in my store.
