Giant Number Line - Part 1
This activity takes some time but it’s worth it! Get a really, really long strip of paper (butcher block type paper is good) and draw out a huge number line. Divide it in units but don’t mark any numbers on it.....
Giant Number Line - Part 2
Now that you’ve created your giant number line it’s time to use it to display addition and subtraction.
Write large-size numbers from 0-25 on card stock. Place those numbers in a blue plastic bucket. Write large-size numbers from -1 to -25 on card stock and place those numbers in a red plastic bucket.
Divide the class into pairs. Have them count off in ones and twos. The ones will pick a positive number from the blue bucket and the twos will pick a negative number from the red bucket, so each pair will have a positive number and a negative number.
As soon as everyone has a card, begin the race!
