High interest lesson that uses kid-friendly facts and videos of the giant squid and polar bear to elicit engagement and provoke thought and discussion on number concepts.
This is a number value lesson introducing/reviewing the concepts of value and place, by starting with all the meanings that can be assigned to an individual digit. As such, it can be applied to grades 2, 3, and 4 with teacher emphasis on desired grade level concepts related to value and place, multiples and factors. I use it in fourth grade to get the students thinking about all they know about numbers and to get them thinking outside the box a bit. I, also, like it, because it introduces how important a context is to a number, thus the importance of labeling answers and solutions. This packet contains all you will need for the lesson: step by step lesson procedure, links to necessary online informational components, and student homework. This lesson can take one or two class periods, depending on how the teacher elaborates on class discussion of elicited concepts.
