About This Activity:
The unit is designed with a cover page for easy photocopying as a workbook style unit. The unit is “print and go”. All workspace is included in the packet. The unit covers the topics of how to plan a field trip, things for the students to consider when planning, structured research, and structured planning space.

The unit workbook provides an explanation of the things that need to be considered when designing a field trip. The workbook is then broken into segments based on these topics: Distance/Location, Academic Connection, Policies/Chaperones, Budget/Cost, Date of Trip, Food, Timing, Fun Elements, Itinerary and Presentation. The culminating activity of the mini-unit is for students to design a presentation to persuade the "Board of Education" that they have planned an effective and meaningful field trip with an academic connection.

Use in The Classroom
I developed this product as an end of year activity for my gifted and talented students. I have used this unit with grade 4-7. I designed this activity to be completed at the end of the year after I had finished all my other units with my students. I wanted to have the students complete a meaningful activity, but didn’t have enough time for an in-depth enrichment unit.

I use this activity in a “looping” program where I teach students year to year. Therefore, I present this activity to students as if they are helping me plan next year’s field trips. I also see this useful in a general education or gifted and talented classroom of multiple middle grades (4-8) because it is meaningful to the students and of high interest to all ages. Even if you don’t loop and have the students year to year, you can present the activity that you will share the brainstorming with their next year teacher.
