WHAT is a hero? WHO is your hero?
In this concept based unit, students will learn about the men and women whose achievements have made a direct or indirect influence in the lives of others. Students will explore the distinction between a hero and a celebrity. They will develop a personal definition of heroism and characteristics of heroes. Students will then select, research, and develop a product on a hero and compare them to a hero from a book they have read. As a follow-up, students will read and annotate a poem on heroes to emphasize the fact that there are heroes all around us.
This unit contains:
*Critical content of a concept based unit including facts, skills, concepts, essential questions, essential understandings, culminating performance task, and assessment strategies.
*8-10 hours of learning activities with complete lesson plans, material lists, links to digital resources, lesson motivation starters, lesson presentation outline, assessment strategies, and extensions.
*Handouts for lessons
*Assessment rubric for culminating activity
*Outcome posters for each lesson
This unit is designed for gifted students in grades 4-6, but could easily be used with students in grades 7 and 8.
