About this Product:

The unit is designed with a cover page for easy photocopying as a workbook style unit. The 25 page unit is “print and go”. All workspace is included in the packet. The students will simply need the internet to complete their research.

The unit guides students through researching famous walking tours, picking a city to create a walking tour, choosing and researching 10 locations, creating information "at a glance" sheets for each location, finding or taking photographs of these locations, creating a map of the locations, and compiling their information on an easy to navigate brochure and/or website. The unit provides extension by asking students to create a marketing social media plan and plans for an app for their tour!

Use in the Classroom:
I designed this project based learning activity to be completed by my 4th-7th gifted and talented classes. We focused on collaborating to create a walking tour of our small town. Inspired by walking tours like the Freedom Trail in Boston, the students picked the locations, researched and photographed the locations, and designed a brochure and a website for our walking tour. The older grades also created social media accounts and posted pictures of their tour research. This was truly a project based learning experience with the goal of creating a genuine walking tour to be used by their community.

In following years, I allowed students to work independently and pick any city of their choice. The culminating project felt just as meaningful, since student choice was involved. Students still utilized a website and brochure to share their tour and brainstormed what their social media accounts would look like as well as an app they would produce for users to digitally access their tour.
