Product Description
I am always looking for meaningful gifts for my students to send home to their families during the Holidays. There are cute Pinterest inspired ornaments, picture frames and so many other creative options out there. As a parent, I think about the types of things that I would love to have from my own children.
After reading Nancie Atwell’s In The Middle and seeing how she uses writing as gifts in her classroom, I knew she was on to something. How meaningful would it be to have students work hard on showing their family members what they mean to them through writing? The idea of using writing as a gift is obviously not mine alone. However, I have put together a resource to help me (and YOU) implement Gift of Writing in your classroom.
I encourage you to use this resource as you see fit. Want to have students write letters to their parents and grandparents? Go for it! Want to do a story AND a letter? Even better. The possibilities are endless on this one. I plan on having students use the letter writing activity for real-world card sending practice. I also will have my students write their own stories and we will be gifting those to parents/guardians too.
Something I believe would make this classroom practice even more valuable is if you would sit down and write along side your students. What better time to show them that their teacher is a writer too? Help them with addressing envelopes, stamp placement and how to properly write a letter. This is an art form of communication that I would love to know my child was practicing at school.
I have included lots of sheets here to help you and your students choose what they would like to use. I made everything in black and white so students can decorate their own pieces before they are sent home.
