Information for the teacher
You have fifteen minutes; do not worry, you are all set
Option one: The students know about exponents but not very well. This would be 6th or 7th graders.

Option two: the kids have been studying the metric system and know about exponents;

Option three: the kids are familiar with scientific notation.

It is two pages, so a front and back. Or you can just project it in front of the class.
For 11th graders for example, run through the first two worksheets in class as review and the pass out EXERCISE gigabytes, scientific notation

For further study

The students live in a world of kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes. Ask them to look specifically at this. Put them in groups and give each group a category (like photos, videos, documents, executables) and let them all go look for information. And then collate the information into a presentation for the class. This might be an hour, then another hour later in the week then an hour for the presentations.
