In this analysis activity, students evaluate the causes and effects of three major strikes during the Gilded Age: the Haymarket Riot, the Pullman Strike and the Homestead Strike. They read summaries of each event and analyze primary and secondary sources such as newspaper accounts and images of the events. After completing a graphic organizer in groups (or individually), they answer analysis questions comparing the three strikes and analyze a political cartoon from the Gilded Age. This activity can be done as a jigsaw, group activity, or station activity. The readings for each strike can be adapted and are attached at the end of the document.
