Students will complete a major Newspaper project on the Gilded Age (Immigration Labor, Rise of Big Businesses, Labor Unions, Manifest Destiny Leading to Indian Removal, Plessy v. Ferguson and Progressive Reforms). The project is divided into 3 major parts. Part 1: Writing the newspaper articles (3 Interview articles with actual people from the time period, 7 information articles, 2 editorials, 1 student created political cartoon and 1 student created advertisement). Part 2: Each group will create a 15 question formal assessment asking DOK 2 and 3 questions. Part 3: Students must research and produce 6 modern news articles that correlate with the 6 topics being studied.
Students work in groups of 2-4, depending on the level of the class. The project takes an entire school week with a block schedule, and approximately 2 weeks with a traditional schedule. Connects real word issues, completely student centered and collaborative.
