Getting students to understand Gilded Age politics is always a challenge, but this history lab works! After a brief overview on the political spectrum and politics of the era and what separated Democrats from Republicans, it asks students to make a claim, "Are you a Gilded Age Republican, Democrat or Populist". The lab covers the elections of 1876-1896 and can be conducted several ways, allowing for group or individual work and can be easily modified as it is in Word format. Students are forced to discover the political differences between big business, Western farmers and laborers involving issues such as tariffs, the money issue, civil service reform and immigration.
