This is a great, interactive, and TOTALLY student-driven lesson. Students assume the roles of various Captains of Industry or Robber Barons and put them on trial. If the person is found "guilty," they are a Robber Baron, if they are found "innocent," they are considered a Captain of Industry. It is up to the students to conduct enough research to convince the jury to side with them. There is a prosecution team, a defense team, a jury, and a judge. You can adjust everything in this activity to fit your needs! I have added people, subtracted people, and even let students run the entire thing themselves. This lesson earned me a Gilder-Lehrman Social Studies Teacher of the Year Nomination.
