Lesson Objective: Students will be able to retell Gingerbread Baby by sequencing key events.

Several options are included, allowing students to sequence story events:

  • text dependent questions
  • Story Map graphic organizer to identify and sequence key events related to plot (can be made into large anchor chart for younger readers)
  • character, story noun, and transition word cards (can be mounted on popsicle sticks for oral retelling)
  • differentiated assessment options for written retelling (rubric included)
  • story event cards for students sequence and practice orally retelling after reading text

At the end of the lesson, students will answer the following question independently: Retell the story from beginning to end. Include important events in Gingerbread Baby.

  • Students get creative and create their own plan to catch Gingerbread Baby! Students consider materials and ideas for catching Gingerbread Baby. Finally, students sequence a list of steps for catching him.
  • Students continue the story by writing and illustrating an additional event that could have taken place after Matti brought Gingerbread Baby home in the gingerbread house.
  • Students describe how Gingerbread Baby’s feelings change from beginning to end. There is a place for students to sketch and write their response.
  • Students think about the actions of Gingerbread Baby and Matti. Then, read and sort the descriptive words and glue next to the matching character. Students then choose one additional word to describe each character and write in the two remaining boxes.
  • Students color the Gingerbread Baby illustration using the color by sight word table.
  • Students read a short passage about the story. To demonstrate their reading comprehension, students cut and paste pictures into correct spots on the illustration.
  • Pages 52-57 are three differentiated readers for students to read independently. Instructions for making the books are on page 51. You will need only ONE piece of paper per student if copied front to back!
