Literacy Centers

CVC Candy Houses – a differentiated CVC activity
RF.K.2c

Version 1: Students choose a candy picture card and say the name. They find a CVC word in a gingerbread house on the recording sheet. Students color the gingerbread house the color of the candy on the picture card.

Version 2: Students choose a candy picture card and say the name. They match the number on the card to the number in a gingerbread house on the recording sheet. Students write the CVC word in that gingerbread house.

Gingerbread Man Letter Sounds – a differentiated letter sound activity
RF.K.2d

Version 1: Students choose a gingerbread man card and say the name of the picture. They determine the beginning sound. Find the gingerbread man on the recording sheet with the beginning letter sound. Students color it.

Version 2: Students choose a gingerbread man card and say the name of the picture. They determine the ending sound. Find the gingerbread man on the recording sheet with the ending letter sound. Students color it.

Rhyming Houses – differentiated rhyme activity
RF.K.2a

Version 1: Students choose rhyming house card. They say the names of the three pictures and choose which one does not rhyme. On the recording sheet students match the number from the card to a gingerbread house on the page. They color the gumdrop in the gingerbread house the color of the gumdrop on the card that does not rhyme.

Version 2: Students choose a rhyming house card. They say the name of the picture in the house. They find a gumdrop card with a picture of something that rhymes with the picture on the house. On the recording sheet students match the number from the gingerbread house card and color the gumdrop the color of the one they matched to the card.

Sight Word Gumdrops – a differentiated sight word activity.
RF.K.3c

Version 1: Students choose a gumdrop card and read the sight word. On the recording sheet they write the word inside a gumdrop with a white crayon. Then they color the gumdrop with a marker that matches the gumdrop.
Version 2: Students unscramble the same colored gumdrops to build a sight word. On the recording sheet they write the word inside a gumdrop with a white crayon. Then they color the gumdrop with a marker that matches the gumdrop.

Syllable Cookies – a differentiated syllable activity
RF.K.2b

Version 1: Students choose a syllable cookie card and say the picture. Count the syllables and place the card on the appropriate cookie tray (1 Syllable, 2 Syllables, 3 Syllables). On the recording sheet students will color the picture the color of the cookie tray it was sorted on.

Version 2: Students choose a syllable cookie card and say the picture. Count the syllables and place the card on the appropriate cookie tray (1 Syllable, 2 Syllables, 3 Syllables). On the recording sheet use a crayon to color the number of cookies below the picture as there are syllables.

Math Centers

Gingerbread Graph - a differentiated graphing activity.
K.CC.A3, K.CC.B.4, K.CC.B.5, K.CC.C.6

Version 1: Students count “how many?” of five different gingerbread themed images in the gingerbread house. After counting each one, they color in the number of squares next to that same image on the recording sheet. Counting up to five.

Version 2: Students count “how many?” of five different gingerbread themed images in the gingerbread house. After counting each one, they color in the number of squares next to that same image on the recording sheet. Then they answer two questions about more or less using their graph they made. Counting up to eight.

How many gumdrops? – a differentiated counting activity
K.CC.B.4, K.CC.B.5, K.OA.A.4

Version 1: Students choose a gingerbread house card and count the number of gumdrops. After counting they find the matching letter on the recording sheet and write the numeral for how many on the line. Then they draw the same amount in the ten frame.

Version 2: Students choose a gingerbread house card and count the number of gumdrops inside. Then they use the gumdrop cards to make ten in all. After that students match the letter on the recording sheet and finish the ten frame. Then they complete the number sentence.

Peppermint Sticks – a differentiated tally marks activity.
K.CC.B.4, K.CC.B.5

Version 1: Students choose a peppermint card and read the number. Once they know how many, they find the matching peppermint stick tallies card. Then they match the letter on the card to a box on the recording sheet. There they draw the correct number of tally marks.

Version 2: Students choose a peppermint card and read the number. Once they know how many, they use the peppermint stick cards to build the correct number of tally marks. Then they match the letter on the card to a box on the recording sheet. There they draw the correct number of tally marks.

Spin & Write – a differentiated numeral writing activity
K.CC.A.3

Students use a gingerbread spinner and a paper clip to spin a numeral and read it. Then they use the recording sheet to trace (option 1) or write (option 2) the numeral in a gumdrop. Four spinners included: 1-6, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20. Each spinner has a recording sheet with numerals to trace and a blank sheet for independent writing.

Sweet Subitizing – a differentiated number sense activity
K.CC.A.3, K.CC.B.4, K.CC.B.5

Version 1: Students match the two-piece puzzle pieces with sets that show the same amount. After that they match the letter on the puzzle to the one on the recording sheet and write how many in the box.

Version 2: Students match the three-piece puzzle pieces with sets that show the same amount. After that they match the letter on the puzzle to the one on the recording sheet and write how many in the box.
