In this fun activity, students will use genotypes, phenotypes, and Punnett Squares to decide which gingerbread kids and parents go home together after the holiday party.
The activity will challenge your students to apply what they’ve learned about genetics and heredity, and use Punnett Squares authentically to help them defend their analysis of the family groups. The picture cards will help them to visualize the offspring and the parents and give them a chance to rearrange family groupings as they work, using both genotype charts and physical appearance to guide their work.
The students will not, however, be able to use physical appearance alone to match the family members because the parents are heterozygous for some traits and homozygous for others. As in real life, recessive traits might be present but masked.
The activity is differentiated with varying levels of support and suggestions for choices that you can make to increase or decrease the challenge depending on the mastery your students have of the basic concepts.
• Gingerbread people cards (3 sets of parents and 7 children) to laminate for individual or small group use.
• A Genotype Chart for students to complete
• A blank Punnett Square card to laminate for each student
• A sheet of blank Punnett Squares to use in place of the laminated card if you wish.
• A student worksheet with questions that will guide your students in matching the families.
• Answer keys for everything.
This activity will take approximately 45-60 min. to complete depending on the level of mastery that students have with using Punnett Squares.
This activity is not intended to replace instruction on Punnett Squares and for best success this activity should be used with students who are very familiar with Punnett Squares, genotypes, phenotypes, and Mendelian inheritance.
