Engage students during the cold winter months in reading, writing and STEM activities that all surround one of your favorite fairy tales.. The Gingerbread Man! Students will study fairy tale elements in the core story, then compare and contrast how the regular version of The Gingerbread Man is the same and is different from various fractured fairy tales. This works with ANY version of The Gingerbread Man that you might have in your library, and also includes my suggestions for various titles to add to your collection.
Students will read different versions of The Gingerbread Man, decorate a gingerbread man, write about the story and then compare it to the original. Their Gingerbread Man will get stored in a cute "gingerbread" house (made out of paper). Each day, students will work as a whole group, in partners or in a small group to complete a new story of the day and to add another Gingerbread Man to their collection. A venn diagram is included to practice comparing and contrasting. There are also gingerbread themed centers to use during this unit. The centers cover synonyms, antonyms, homophones and parts of speech. They include a recording sheet as well as an answer key.
In writing, students will write 3 pieces: a how to (How To Make Gingerbread Houses), an imaginative narrative (My Gingerbread Story) and an opinion piece (My Favorite Gingerbread Story). Students can spend anywhere from 1 week to 1 day working on each piece, and in the end can publish and compile them into a book.
There are 5 fun STEM challenges included, 4 that can be completed with ANY STEM materials, and one that will need components from home. Students will construct gingerbread houses. A parent letter is included to get materials from home.
There is a teaching guide included to describe how I would teach this unit throughout 3 weeks of school. This is a perfect supplement to the holiday months, but can be taught at any time throughout the school year! It is a great addition to any fairy tale unit. Please note that you need to have various versions of The Gingerbread Man for this to work best.
