Gingerbread Man: Reader's Theater for Grades 1 and 2

A 3 page, 7 part reader's theater script for the folk tale The Gingerbread Man. The script is written with primary students in mind and contains parts for Emergent to Transitional readers as follows:

o High Emergent (roughly DRA 4-10): old woman, cow, dog, fox

o Transitional (roughly DRA 12-18): horse, gingerbread man, narrator

The parts of the old woman, cow, dog and horse are small, just 1-2 lines.

Mixed ability scripts allow children to work with classmates who may not be in their reading groups and makes for a nice change. It also allows fluent readers to model good reading habits and lets struggling readers participate in reading "meatier" text.

There are 8 copies of the script, a master plus 7 more which have the individual part highlighted. The teacher can then just hand out the scripts without needing any further prep work. If you need more copies or would like to combine/divide parts or only have access to a black and white photocopier, the master is provided.

Also includes full page, color images of each character which students can use to make hats or neck signs to identify their part to the audience.

A Christmas version of this script, where the Gingerbread man is chased by Mrs. Claus, Santa, an elf, and a reindeer, is also available as a FREE download. In this version, the gingerbread man is eaten by a Polar Bear who puts him on his back to climb a mountain.
