Developmentally appropriate Gingerbread math centers for the preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten classroom! This resource is perfect for all developmental and cognitive levels of early childhood. The centers are fun, engaging, and offer challenges and reinforcement of basic skills.
This resource is set up with 3 levels of developmentally appropriate Measurement and size comparison centers for the early childhood classroom. Every class is different, every student is different, so this resource gives you the option of starting out slowly, building on what your students know, and offering a challenge as skills are mastered.
Level 1: Size Comparison & Sorting
This beginning level starts us off on the foundation that all numbers represent a quantity. Students will count the images on one set of cards and match the amount shown to a number on a different card. This center can be leveled as well. I have included numbers 0-20. I would choose 0-5 for a beginning level, move up to 0-10, 0-15, and 0-20 as the class progresses. Choose how far to go with your students based on what they can accomplish with some amount of challenge.
Level 2: Measure & Compare
This center activity builds on the first by measuring two different-sized items with unifix cubes. There are 8 mats with 16 different gingerbread friends to measure and compare. The same size language should be used with this activity to build on the first. You have the added element of comparing unifix cube towers for length, and you can count the number of cubes used to measure each picture.
Level 3: Non-Standard Measurement with Gingerbread Friends!
This activity builds on the first two. Students will use gingerbread friends to measure each other and things around the classroom. This activity brings in the option of charting and graphing “how many gingerbread friends tall” each other are! A fun way to teach measuring and graphing!
