I created this activity last year as a fun way to introduce my kindergarten students to the concept of area and perimeter. I was very surprised at how well they understood the two concepts after we did this activity.
I explain perimeter as “around the outside” and area as “covering the whole picture.”
After we talk about what area and perimeter mean, we measure perimeter and area of each picture using peppermints, Hershey kisses and red hots. There are 19 different pictures to measure. As the students measure, we count and record our measurement on our class chart. After we finish measuring we have a discussion about why the measurements were different.
And finally, we eat the candy!
This is a very engaging, hands on activity that my students loved and I hope yours will too!
