In search of engaging, investigation-based science activities to accompany your gingerbread unit? This product integrates the scientific method with inquiry-based STEAM activities that will have your little scientists thinking critically, expressing themselves creatively, and having tons of FUN! This pack is a perfect extension of the gingerbread man stories. You will receive the following:
“My Gingerbread Science Journal”: 6 Investigations are included in this journal.
Investigation 1 “My Senses”-Provide each student in your class with a gingerbread cookie. They will use their sense of sight, touch, and smell to observe the cookie. They will draw the cookie and complete the following sentence frames: “He looks ___. He smells ___. He feels ___.”
Investigation 2 “My Sense of Taste”-Provide each student in your class with a gingerbread cookie to taste. Use the provided pages to create a graph on chart paper to record how many students liked/did not like the gingerbread. After creating the class graph students will record results in their journal.
Investigation 3 “Crossing the River”-Students will hypothesize and record what might happen if a gingerbread man (cookie) is placed in water. Place a cookie in a cup of water, observe, and record results.
Investigation 4 “Building a Boat”-Provide students with building materials such as heavy-duty aluminum foil, craft sticks, straws, and tape. Students will build a boat that can carry the paper gingerbread man (included) across the “river” (a tub of water).
Investigation 5 “Testing the Boat”-Give students a paper gingerbread man (included) to place in their boat. You could also use a gingerbread cookie! Fill a plastic tub or bin with water. Have students place their boat in the water to see if it keeps the gingerbread man dry! Students will record the results in their journal.
Investigation 6 “Building a Trap”-Provide students with materials such as construction paper, craft sticks, glue, markers, tape, empty tissue boxes, and paper candy (included). Students will build a “trap” to catch the gingerbread man!
The following 2 art/literacy activities are also included in this pack:
Class Book- “The Gingerbread Man Ran!” : Students will illustrate a hiding place for the Gingerbread Man. They should write their own name in the first sentence and the hiding place in the second sentence. Assemble all of the pages with the provided cover page to create a class book.
