Give your students the opportunity to build their own Gingerbread using a select number of supplies. They will get to plan ahead, build and then see how well it withstands in various conditions. I have done all the work for you, all you need to do is have parents bring the supplies (or you can) and your students will be in for an interactive and intriguing lesson.


Students read about Gingerbread houses and then plan their own gingerbread house. Then they get to use their plan to put together their gingerbread house.



  • 1st Mini Book - It includes pictures and the story. It is for a 1st grade reading level.
  • 2nd Mini Book- This is a fill in the blank book and the student adds their own pictures.
  • Pre-Planning Pages- Differentiated for students to plan their building
  • Building Ideas - Various ideas to meet the needs of your students.
  • Extension Ideas- Extend the unit further



This Gingerbread Unit can be used in addition to other Christmas themed activities or a stand alone. It can be spread out over a few days or used all at once. The pre-activities can be done in a small group or whole group and the building can be done individually or as a group.



This unit is differentiated. There are two types of mini books depending on your readers, there are also two types of planning pages. One is more drawing pictures and the other is more writing based. The actual building of the Gingerbread House, there are various ways to do it. All are included in the unit. You can pick the route that works best for your students or even pick a few routes.
