Giraffes Can't Dance by Giles Andreae & Guy Parker-Rees is a story about a determined giraffe named Gerald who attempts to dance in front of his friends, but has difficulty due to his wobbly legs. The jungle animals are unkind to Gerald and begin to laugh at him for his dancing skills. A cricket offers Gerald kind and encouraging words which inspires him to dance to the beat of his own song. In the end, Gerald impresses the other animals with his dancing and new found confidence.
This lesson plan focus on the importance of respecting the unique differences of others and how bullying behavior can result if friends are unkind and disrespectful. Students learn that it is important to respect differences and also believe in the unique characteristics that they possess.
