Giraffes Can't Dance Literacy Menus/Contracts are perfect to use in your class to promote independence with your students. These choice board activities are a great book companion to use after reading the story, ‘Giraffes Can't Dance,’ by Giles Andreae. Giraffes Can't Dance choice boards cater for the diverse needs of your students, and includes abundant activities to engage your class! They can also be used in your literacy centers, Daily 5, homework, early finishers of quiet independent work.
Giraffes Can't Dance literacy pack consists of 2 sets of 9 weekly literacy choice boards in color and black and white. The contracts are also available in US spelling and Australian. The literacy contracts are designed to use 4 days a week from Monday-Thursday.
Students select 2 boxes to work on a day during your literacy block. Once they have completed a box they color their box in with a colored pencil. They work independently on each task while the teacher pulls out groups for guided reading/writing.
Alternatively the literacy contracts could be used as a 'Tic-Tac-Toe' activity, where students select an activity, and mark a cross or circle in each box once completed. The goal is to have 3 crosses or circles in a row horizontally, diagonally or vertically.
Activities included in the contracts:
•Comprehension strategies – Connecting, predicting, prior knowledge, summarizing, visualizing and making inferences.
•Spelling activity – jumble up the letters to a different word each week to make a list of new words. For example in the word Gerald, I can make: lad, glad, rad, dear, rag, lag, ear, gear and lots more.
•Labeling – draw and label a picture from the story each week and label it.
•Favorites – write about favorite part in the story and character.
•Drawing activities – setting, problem, ending and characters in the story that display certain character traits.
•Grammar – listing nouns, verbs, adjectives and proper nouns from the story.
•Design – design a new book cover for the story.
•Describe – write a description about Gerald.
•Diary Entry – Imagine you are Gerald and write a diary entry for a day.
•Create – new title, comic strip, A-Z list, book mark and a poster.
•Vocabulary – synonyms, antonyms and similes.
•Creative thinking – writing activities about the story.
•Facts & Opinions - write facts and opinions about Gerald.
The literacy contracts are very user friendly and easy for students to understand with visual cues in each box. Teacher instructions are also included.
