I say summarize, you say shorten.

Summarize.
Shorten.
Summarize.
Shorten.

This lesson is used with Howie Schneider's picture book, Chewy Louie. I think this book is a necessity in every classroom whether you teach first or sixth grade because it easily teaches students how to summarize. It's also full of inferences. At one point, the dad says, "That one didn't make him sick either." Students must infer that the puppy ate that bowl too. Another inference is when the someone says, "He liked her songs, but he really loved her guitar."

Use this lesson to help students find the key elements of plot: character, setting, problem, solution. It also models how to use parts of speech to stretch the summary sentence by using an appositive, adjectives, an adverb, and a pronoun.

One picture book can teach so much!
