My reading students greatly enjoyed a phonics card game for digraphs that I got from another teacher called "Give a Dog a Bone," so I had to make a new version for our unit on blends! This game features cats instead of dogs, which kicked up the engagement factor for them. :)
This card game can be played with two players or more. Players take turns picking a card and reading the word on it.
If the card has one fish, the player just reads the word.
If the word has two fish, the player reads the word and uses it in a sentence.
Ex: “Black. The black cat is unlucky.”
If the card has three fish, the player reads the word, uses it in a sentence, and points out what pattern(s) it has.
Ex: “Black. The black cat is unlucky. Black has the bl blend and the ck digraph.”
The player with the most fish at the end wins!
This is a highly engaging game with a friendly competitive twist. I hope your students enjoy it!
