My reading students greatly enjoyed a phonics card game for digraphs that I got from another teacher called "Give a Dog a Bone," so I had to make a new version for our unit on blends! I made a blends version with cats called Give a Cat a Fish
. This version focuses on end blends and the theme was picked out by my students - if you couldn't already tell!
This card game can be played with two players or more. Players take turns picking a card and reading the word on it.
If the card has one treat, the player just reads the word.
If the word has two treats, the player reads the word and uses it in a sentence.
Ex: “Plump. My plump cat loves tuna.”
If the card has three treats, the player reads the word, uses it in a sentence, and points out what pattern(s) it has.
Ex: “Plump. My plump cat loves tuna. Plump has the pl blend and the mp blend.”
The player with the most Rice Krispies Treats at the end wins!
This is a highly engaging game with a friendly competitive twist. I hope your students enjoy it!
