This is part of my basic behavior management plan. It lets my middle school students have a chance to correct their own behavior before it becomes a bigger issue and allows them the opportunity to take ownership for their actions.
If a I student is acting up, first give students a verbal warning and/or might quietly pass them a laminated "Stop" sign. At this point they know that something they did was against a class rule. (I display mine in the front of my class as a reference so all students know what I am expecting of them.) If I need o speak with them again I have a designated "Cool Down Area" where they are to go and write a brief explanation of what is going on or why they are having trouble following a rule.
I let them know at the beginning of the year that when they go to cool down it's an automatic phone call home. MOST of the time the students will take this opportunity as a chance to "get their act together" before anyone else (principal, dean, guidance, etc.) needs to become involved. They really like explaining THEIR opinions!
This system really works for me and let's students know you care about them when you read their "reflection" which I try to do as quickly as possible.
This product is a bundle of my consequence chart (a visual guide to the tired levels for undesired behaviors),Signs for your own Cool Down Zone, and a bunch of STOP signs that you can print, cut out, and laminate for your class.
Hope it works for you too!
