This guide is intended to be used before reading The Giver. Students will go through a simulation of an emergency plane landing (on the way to fictional Gulla Gulla Island) and will need to use clues to attempt to figure out their location.
Included in this document are the following:
• One page includes all the clues as to our location
• 14 pages have different individual clues for students as well as thinking questions about government, values, and location
• The final page is a group work page if your students complete the questions in groups
The goal of this activity is to have students thinking about a few factors in the setting of The Giver: what the government is like, what the citizens value, and where the community is located. None of the clues give away the plot of the novel.
• Clues: either separated into strips (page 2) or individual pages (pages 3-16)
• Big paper
Each student should have one clue. Students will need to gather information from around the room in order to have a more complete picture of the community.
Next, they should make a visual representation of the community based on the clues provided and present their representations to the class (either as a group presentation or a gallery walk). Students should compare their interpretations with their classmates’ interpretations.
