Giving Advice with Dear Abby
Product Description
An activity to practice giving advice and vocabulary related to relationships. Used for my 12th grade ESL class but usable for other levels as well.

Includes: a powerpoint presentation to give background about Dear Abby letters and provide an example of a letter written to Abby and her response as well as 4 different letters from people seeking advice. Each letter also contains three highlighted idiomatic expressions about relationships for students to define using context clues.

After explaining the concept of Dear Abby, two student volunteers read the letter asking for advice and Abby's response. As a class, we defined the highlighted expressions. Then, students worked in groups to read and interpret their assigned letter, define the highlighted phrases, and write a response giving advice. Afterwards, students read their letters and responses aloud for the class.
