Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of year to help students reflect on how much they have to be thankful for. I also use this writing assignment as a way for students to use the writing process to write a well-organized paragraph. They have to understand and use descriptive words such as grateful, appreciate and cherish to convey thankfulness. The checklist is a great way for students to work independently to complete this assignment.
As a result, this activity is aligned with Common Core Standards (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.2 and CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.5) for writing explanatory text and using the revision process.
It can be completed in class or sent home as a homework assignment. I usually have students make and paste their paragraphs on paper pumpkins and hang them in class.
Included in this activity:
assignment page that gives step-by-step instructions and definitions
student writing checklist
teacher grading rubric
You can differentiate this assignment by increasing/decreasing the number of descriptive words, sentences or paragraphs that students use. Enjoy!
