Product Description
This differentiated activity has 3 learning tiers (A,B, C). Teach students how glaciers create new landforms through erosion and deposition by having them create their own models!

Materials required: old cookie sheets or metal trays, ice cubes, flour, cinnamon or another dark colored spice.

The lesson focuses on 5 key terms (esker, kettle lake, moraine, outwash, and glacial erratic) and 2 key processes (erosion and deposition).

Students are asked to build a model of glacier movement, identify these five features in the resulting topography, and explain how the topography was created by erosion and deposition.

Differentiated Assignments
A: Students receive concrete directions with illustrations to assist in understanding. This lesson focuses on erosion and deposition and sorting the landforms into those created by erosion or deposition. Students are not asked to identify the landforms created by name. If students given this assignment finish early they should be given the definition sheet. They should extend their understanding and try to identify the landforms in their model.
B: Students in this group are given more vague directions and no detailed illustrations. Students start by predicting if the landforms will be formed by erosion or deposition. After completing the demonstration students are asked to try and identify the landforms in their model given the definition sheet. Finally, students go back to their predictions and evaluate if the predications were correct and why.
C: Students in this group are asked to research the landform terms and write their own definitions for each. Then, given a basic description of how a glacier moves, students must design their own model for the movement of a glacier and the sediment underneath. If students have difficulty have them research glaciers on the internet to learn more about how they look and move. After their demonstration activity students use their definitions and their model to identify each feature and evaluate their model. Erosion and deposition processes are evaluated both before their activity and after.
